Installation

Follow the steps below to set up Saphi.

Requirements

Make sure you have the following before proceeding:

  • Visual C++ Redistributable
    Required on Windows
  • Latest GPU Drivers
Install the most recent driver for your GPU
  • Saphi Account
Required to log in and save submissions
  • SCPH 1001 BIOS
    Original, unmodified copy
  • NTSC-U CTR ROM
    Original, unmodified copy
Once you are set, you can go ahead and download the client for your respective operating system on the downloads page.
SCPH 1001 BIOS

SCPH 1001 refers to the 2nd batch of PS1 models that got produced in North America starting from December 1995 — you will need the BIOS file that was used for these models.

Unfortunately we cannot share this file on our website — you need to do your own research on how to get your hands on it.
NTSC-U CTR ROM

The copy of NTSC-U CTR needs to be an original, unmodified one. The correct MD5 checksum is:

ab95bfca8a4bb3d90daa6519acf6e944

If the checksum of your copy does not match, you will encounter an error during the setup later.

Much like the SCPH 1001 BIOS, we cannot share this file on our website.

Installation

1 Unpack & Launch

After download, unpack the client into any folder on your hard drive. Once unpacked, simply run Client.exe and you're ready to set it up.

Once the client opens, you will see a bunch of error messages and warnings. Don't worry — that's normal.

First boot screen
2 Log In

Navigate to the Settings tab and look at the account section. Provide your username and password that you also use for our website.

Note on "Remember me": This will store your password in plain text inside data/config.json. If you don't want this, do not use this feature. Also don't share your config.json with other players without removing your password from that file!

Once your login is successful, the display of the form will change to "Logged in as: XYZ". After that, you can go back to the Status tab and tackle the warnings and errors.

3 Resolve Status Messages

After logging in, go back to the Status tab and resolve any remaining warnings and errors listed below.

Not connected to Emulator

This is just a warning — not an error. This message appears if you have not launched the game yet.

Invalid PS1 Bios File

This means you need to configure the path to a valid PS1 BIOS. Navigate to the Settings tab and go to the File Paths section. You will see 2 file selectors there.

Empty file paths

The field on the bottom says SCPH 1001 Bios File. Once you have a valid SCPH 1001 BIOS file, simply select it here and the client should show a checkmark.

BIOS configured successfully

Game path does not match with an original NTSC-U CTR game file

This error is similar to the Invalid PS1 Bios File error. Go back to Settings and navigate to the File Paths section. Provide a copy of the NTSC-U version of Crash Team Racing.

Once you have a valid NTSC-U CTR ROM file, simply select it here and the client should show a checkmark.

ROM configured successfully

Update Available! X.Y

This is not an error — just a notification that an update is available. On a fresh install, you don't have any version installed, so press "Update" once. This will:

  • Download Duckstation and configure the correct settings to play Saphi
  • Download the newest Saphi mod version for CTR
  • Download the newest version of the Saphi Client (if on an older version)

Once the update has finished, you should see an Update completed. message.

Update completed

The Update Available! message can reappear in the future if there are new releases of Saphi.

Play

The Launch Game button should now be green (like on the image below). Simply press it and play the game!

Game ready to launch
